In 2013 the UK is once again host to the G8 Summit for the first time since 2005, eight world leaders from the most powerful capitalist nations are meeting here on our home turf.

The G8 facilitates irresponsible greed, corporate protectionism, overwhelming inequality and ruthless exploitation. It is here, at the G8 summit, that the economic, political and military objectives for the year ahead will be discussed and agreed.

So while the global elite plot their next actions to pillage and plunder the land, our homes and our minds let’s relax and have a nice spot of dinner.

Come along on Saturday 2nd February from 6pm with (or without) a VEGAN meal to share with others. There will be a short presentation on the G8 and why it should be opposed, an update by the stop G8 network and hopefully plenty of discussion.

The Red and Black is hosting an update on the legal situation around squatting, including how the English and Welsh squatting community has been affected by the law change last year and what’s still happening despite it!

We’re happy to welcome squatters from London who have been involved in the Eviction Resistance network and Squash – the Squatters Action for Secure Homes campaign and look forward to an update from these groups, and to discuss how we might have to unite again to stop the criminilastion of squatting in dissused commercial properties which has been proposed by some MP’s.

We also hope to update each other on the latest local squatting news from Cardiff, London and elsewhere, and bring in a discussion on how we can show solidarity with the hundreds of squatters evicted and arrested in Athens in the last few days.

Tea, coffee, biscuits and maybe a splattering of gack is likely to be available.

As the Red and Black Umbrella is also our home, it was inevitable that some of us would be home for the 25th December, we have decided to open up on good ‘ol xmas day and have a lovely big (Vegan-as usual) pot luck meal with an open invitation to friends, family and comrades.

Hot food, tea, coffee, deserts and other vegan treats all welcome, bring a dish! (If you don’t, pretend you did…)

We hope to celebrate the day the same as the rest of the country, but for us it will be a celebration with different personal meanings, instead of part of the capitalist/religious show. There will be no baubles, tinsel or tree, but please do feel free to bring all the pudding you like!

Normally as part of our safer spaces policy our pot lucks are dry events but as it’s a special occasion drink will be tolerated, drunkenness not.

Last Monday we at the RBU had a house meeting where a few close friends came to help out with events and input into the running of the RBU. We greatly appreciated their input and the whole new atmosphere at the meeting felt really good so we have now chosen to host regular social center meetings come new year. . Keep an eye on this site for updates on when that will be.
The agenda was long, and I don’t have the minutes handy but I can guarantee that next year our calendars will be packed with events, workshops and socials that will be run by awesome people and you will not want to miss one of them!

A sneak preview of things to be hosted at the RBU in the new year- combat and self defense skill sharing, sea Shepard talk, language lessons, Cardiff ABC, survival/wilderness skill sharing, renewable energy workshops, readings groups and some other stuff that I can’t remember but I’m sure it’s pretty cool too!
If you have any ideas for the space, would like to organize a workshop, run an event, cook for a people’s kitchen or just want to help out and hang out, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Use of the space is free, and we try and make ALL our event donation based ONLY, so if you’re skint (like me…) you won’t miss out.

This Thursday 22nd November @ 7pm the Red and Black Umbrella will host a discussion about the armed group, Revolutionary Struggle in Greece. This will be a good opportunity to discuss armed struggle and it’s effects, how such groups are perceived by the state, the states reactions to such groups and a general overview of the Revolutionary Struggle cases so far.

To mark the arrival of the Anarchist Black Cross Prisoner Art Tour (http://bristolabc.wordpress.com/art-tour/) featuring the artwork of a number of revolutionary and rebellious prisoners worldwide, we invite you to a short notice presentation and discussion of prison and the society that creates it. Monday Nov 5 we’ll be meeting at 7pm at the Red & Black Umbrella to have an informal discussion and an opportunity to look at & perhaps be inspired by the artwork of these imprisoned freedom-lovers.

When can you get away with not giving the police your name and address? What are the benefits of giving a ‘no comment’ police interview, and how do you do it? If you kick a cop when he’s not in the ‘execution of his duty’ is that always a criminal offence? And what do people mean by all those ‘sections’? section 5, section 12, section 60…..what does it all mean?

This workshop will go through some useful info and basic rights in relation to public order, stop and search, arrest and custody. For those who want it, there will also be training on how to be a legal observer.
