A building was squatted – it became a social centre and was named after an umbrella.
Now, after two years, we who live in it want to invite more people to be a part of the activities of the social centre, and call-out for help to go forward with events, gigs, info-nights, film showings and more, which will benefit people in East Cardiff and beyond, and provide a lasting injection of ideas of radical social change in an area where poverty is creating destitution and government cuts are biting further.
To further our aims we will have monthly meetings, work-days, and as much as we can possibly fit into this space.
We hope to see you at the first of these meetings, tonight, at 7pm, and please check the Calendar for more events already organised for this month as we welcome the coming of the spring!
We've been through a lot in the last 2 years, 3 months, but Adamsdown's
Social Centre is still running, and we welcome new people getting
involved: PLEASE COME ALONG if you have any ideas for the space or would
like to use the space to run an event of your own...There haven’t been many people showing up to the social centre meetings,
so we’ve decided to hold more promoted ones once a month. They will be on
the first Tuesday of every month.
Therefore the next general meeting will be on Tuesday 4th March at 7pm.
And around this time we plan to hold a workshop to get another step
forward in renewable energy generation - with the making of our very own
pedal powered generator! So we can then always keep the juice in the
We are also starting weekly cleaning and maintenance sessions, hoping to
improve the condition of the building itself and make it more suitable and
inviting as a venue. If you want to help out or get to know the crew, come
along on Saturday between 12noon and 4pm.
It is also possible to contact the crew by emailing us on the usual email
address - redandblackumbrella[at]riseup.net
- or through the Cardiff Squatters Network phone on 07596 821 368 – we'll
be checking these regularly and ideas suggested can be raised
by someone on your behalf at the next meeting if you can’t make it
Meetings, as ever, at the Red and Black Umbrella, 57-58 Clifton Street,
Cardiff CF24 1LS – hope to see you there.

I will wander the world alone carrying my hatred and scorn everywhere.
Alone in struggle.
Alone in victory and in defeat. Bruno Filippi
Souls who are grieving for this world, this is why I call you to gather together.
The flag is already waving.
It is black; it stands for mourning. Forward then, wild Promethei. The cry of vengeance is music sweet and dear.
Today it is necessary to kill, to destroy … tomorrow we will be daisies …
Forward, Federation of Sorrow! Bruno Filippi
Nothing delicate can survive here.
Only the brutal.
Seagulls brash as boys.
The rest sit thin-skinned as frogs,
trying to throw themselves like the sun into the formidable sea.
“So, farewell for now, my friend, until the next round of magic and mayhem against civilisation.”
Also this will be the launch party of the first Ffyc offer Ffesbwc DIY underground zine for a year! Info stalls include contributions from the IWW Cymru – the Welsh branch of the Industrial Workers of the World who have recently celebrated their first year.
We’ll also be raising funds for people arrested on a Smash EDO action earlier this year.
£4 on the door. (For a good cause, but could be less if you don’t have it.)

People’s Kitchen is back again tonight at the Red and Black Umbrella.
Come by at 7pm for a hot home-made vegan meal, tea, coffee, and more!
Acoustic guitars and other instruments at the ready, we might have a bit of a jam afterwards. Our Radical Library and free shop will also be open. Event is free but donations welcomed to cover costs. This will be the last People’s Kitchen before January. x
On the 10th of December at 3pm the Red and Black Umbrella crew will organise the first “autonomous fitness collective” session. It will aim to be inclusive for all those that that take part – and could become a weekly feature, with newcomers always welcome. They will also hopefully be fun and aim to support and inspire our local community. Also sometimes it’s just good to be fitter than those we oppose…
We are going to step outside of the ordinary the normed and find ourselvesin a group that is female dominated in number.
Saturday 9th November, 2013. 2.30pm
Groups are rarely that,
they are mostly mixed or male dominated, as a gender we often do not have
much access to female social space. Social space,-club space eating or
drinking space, is male dominated. The street is mixed.
In order to be sure of this we must skew the balance against the norm and
draw the invitation line at women only. This is a group conciseness window
which we can use to experience Normed human interactions objectively.
I want us to explore body language, space and status, using theatre games
The best way is by having fun. This is not about being deadly serious.
