People’s Kitchen and new Catering Collective, Tuesday 6:30pm

This Tuesday 21st May from 6:30pm, the social centre will be open for the return of People’s Kitchen.

Everyone is welcome come and to share a hot vegan meal with us, served free from around 7pm.

Donations welcomed to cover costs. (gas, dry food etc.)

We will also open the free shop, the library, info shop and bike workshop space and there will be an open mic afterwards for anyone who wants to bring an instrument etc!

This Tuesday we will also be discussing the setting up of a new local Catering Collective, and we’re looking for people to get involved!

Under capitalism food is distributed according to privilege and sold for ever increasing prices. Those with enough privilege to access it have what they desire, whilst even in supposedly wealthy places many people suffer hunger and malnutrition. Our starting point is that food should be communal. We want to promote this in our work by catering for events, meetings, actions, demos etc. around the causes that we believe in. There is a plan to head to Calais, France, for a week in July already, but nothing is fixed just yet.

If you haven’t been to the RBU yet this year, this would be a great night to come. We hope to see you there next week! Squeebz and co x

History of the Road Protest UK Part one- Reclaim the Streets Film Screening at the Wells Hotel

The Red and Black Umbrella have joined forces with The Wells Hotel (77 Craddock street, Riverside) to present to you a twoday two part ‘History of the Road Protest UK.’
The first part of the two day event will be on April 12th when we will show an hour long documentary about the Reclaim the Streets movement that hit Britain and the rest of the world in the 90′s. The movement was anti-capitalist, anti-car and consisted of many different people from many different walks of life coming together to celebrate in the street and show the government that mass mobilization can be fun. We don’t need to spend extortionate amounts of money to have a good time!
Guest speakers T.B.A. Doors at 6.30pm, film will begin at 7pm.
Vegan snacks and beverages for donations will be provided. Money made will go to the Combe Haven defenders and other current road protest funds.

The National Front have called a “White Pride World Wide” demonstration in Swansea on March 9th, and a strong antifascist presence is planned in response.

With the English Defence League in a shambles and the BNP imploding, racist yobs are hoping to unite under an old banner unsullied, as they see it, by the various failures, fractures and disgraces that have engulfed the far right in recent years. We need to take them seriously, and oppose any attempt to bring their hateful, hideous ideologies onto our streets. A threat to any section of our community is a threat to society as a whole and must not be tolerated.

Another Spring is just around the corner and with it comes another Seedy Sunday.

On Sunday 10th March from 12pm the Red and Black will be hosting Seedy Sunday. A day of horticulture workshops, discussions and of course… seed swapping!

Bring down any spare gardening materials and seeds that you’d like to share with others.

(This event is family friendly, despite the expected level of seediness.)

End Vivisection at Cardiff University

A research program taking place at Cardiff University to tackle major human diseases by breeding and experimenting on genetically modified mice is causing nightmarish suffering to hundreds of thousands of animals every year. For every GM mouse used in an experiment, hundreds more will die or be killed as ‘surplus’ or ‘failures’. The scale of suffering involved is greater than in any other area of animal research.

Despite huge amounts of funding over several years, including from the charity Cancer Research UK (CRUK), these programs have failed to deliver benefits for human patients. Using GM mice to mimic human disease is not delivering meaningful healthcare advances.

Queer & Queer Allies Talk

On Saturday 2nd March, alongside the regular free cafe from 4pm, there will be a Queer and Queer Allies Talk @ the Red and Black Umbrella.

It will be an open space for LGBT+, queer and allies to meet, talk and share information, literature and music over a cup of tea and some biscuits.

All welcome, leave prejudices at the door.

Acwstic Afiach

On Tuesday 26th Feb. from 7:30pm Afiach is back again with another bill of awesome artists @ the Wells Hotel.

The event will be raising funds for the Sophie Lancaster foundation which aims to tackle discrimination of subcultures.

As per usual there’ll be food, zines, art and plenty of good company. B.Y.O.B.

Playing on Tuesday are Louise Distras (Lively, angry up and coming folk grrrl,) Lost Soul (Socially conscious acoustic punk,) and the local stylings of Efa Supertramp and Aisha.
